3D Systems Introduces “Jaw in a Day”, Allows for Full Jaw Reconstruction in a Single Surgery

Through the latest addition to 3D Systems’ VSP (Virtual Surgical Planning) Reconstruction product line, surgeons are able to perform patient-specific jaw reconstructions in a single surgery. “Jaw in a Day” could spare patients from months of painful and costly medical treatment.

Dental rehabilitation usually requires multiple surgeries and persistent care over a period of six to twelve months, often resulting in patients missing teeth for some time. This does not only involve functional but also aesthetic and psychological effects on the patient.

Using Jaw in a Day, surgeons work with engineers from 3D systems who use CAD/CAM technology to create a personalised surgical plan with patient-specific guides, models and instruments that are 3D printed and sterilised for use during the procedure. An immediate placement of a provisional dental prothesis eliminates the need for multiple surgeries, reduces the costs for treatment and ensures a quicker recovery period.

According to David L. Hirsch, DDS, MD, Director of Oral Oncology & Reconstruction, Lenox Hill Hospital/Northwell Health, and Co-Developer of Jaw in a Day, “This single-stage reconstruction technique has streamlined the treatment of my patients. It avoids multiple procedures, shaving months off the time required for full dental rehabilitation.”
