AddUp adds 17-4 PH stainless steel to material portfolio for FormUp 350

AddUp, a global OEM for additive manufacturing solutions, recently announced the integration of 17-4 PH stainless steel into the material portfolio of its FormUp 350 powder bed fusion machine.

The 17-4 PH alloy, known for its high strength and corrosion resistance, has been successfully qualified for use in AddUp’s FormUp 350 machines. This steel is particularly suitable for medical applications and can be certified according to the ISO 7153/1 and ASTM F899 standards. The material is used, for example, in surgical instruments, medical screwdrivers and dental drills.

Swathi Vunnam, AddUp’s Materials Engineering Manager, explains, “17-4 PH stainless steel exhibits full martensitic properties when processed conventionally. However, when additively manufactured layer-by-layer, it presents microstructural anisotropy, which can be homogenized through standard heat treatments. This unique characteristic allows for precise engineering of the microstructure, resulting in an optimal balance of strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance.”

The FormUp 350 is characterized by a large installation volume, which increases productivity, and a roller coating technology that ensures excellent surface quality. In addition, the machine is equipped with a fully automatic, closed Autonomous Powder Module (APM) energy supply system that optimizes the use of 17-4 PH stainless steel.

AddUp offers comprehensive support, from application identification, development and qualification to production on an industrial scale. The technical team works closely with customers to tailor the materials to the specific needs of the applications.
