3D Printing Specialist Metafold secures $1.78 Million in Funding

Metafold, a provider of a cloud- and API-based 3D design platform, has secured $1.78 million in seed funding to drive mass adoption of industrial 3D printing.

Differential Ventures led the oversubscribed round, which was also supported by Active Impact Investments, Jetstream and Standup Ventures.

Common CAD and CAE desktop software is designed for traditional manufacturing processes, which requires powerful workstations. 3D printing offers new possibilities for complex shapes that are unattainable through traditional methods. Metafold bridges the gap between 3D printing hardware and the software it requires, enabling the broad application of 3D printing.

Metafold developed a high-precision geometry calculation engine that delivers accurate designs for 3D printing complex parts. The company’s SaaS platform enables manufacturers to produce optimized parts, using fewer raw materials and producing energy-efficient parts.

“Sustainability in manufacturing is ultimately driven by two factors-improving the material consumption of existing fabrication methods and designing for optimality over the lifetime use of manufactured goods,” says mathematician Dr. Elissa Ross, co-founder and CEO of Metafold. “3D printing achieves those goals and has the potential to be even more impactful with the right digital infrastructure. We’re excited to be backed by investors who recognize both the commercial and climate benefits of scaling this extraordinary manufacturing methodology.”

Metafold is currently rapidly gaining traction in key markets such as biotechnology and sportswear, helping its customers design, test and manufacture optimized structures.

“Metafold’s technology will be game changing for designing and visualizing complex structures in 3D printing, making currently impossible designs possible,” shared David Magerman, founding partner at Differential Ventures. “Co-founders Elissa, Daniel, and Tom are a great team to bring this product to market.”
