3D-printed alternative for the Ring camera

Adafruit Industries is an open source hardware company based in New York that is constantly presenting interesting products. Founded in 2005, the company recently presented MEMENTO Camera, an exciting surveillance camera.

A current “do-it-yourself” project is the IoT doorbell camera. In a tutorial, the company shows how to create a practical IoT doorbell using the MEMENTO camera module from Adafruit. The housing is simply created using 3D printing. Adafruit offers the corresponding files free of charge on its own website.

The other parts required can be obtained directly from Adafruit. The company also publishes instructions for assembling and using the software.

The finished product is not only reminiscent of well-known smart doorbell products, but the functions are also impressive. At the touch of a button, the camera triggers a recording and then makes it available on the dashboard. The images captured by the camera are not transmitted to third-party providers, but instead end up on a private feed on the Adafruit IoT dashboard. Thanks to the uncomplicated programming with CircuitPython, the source code can also be easily adapted.
