3D Systems releases its ProJet 5000 and works together with Daimler. 3D Systems is already known for their 3D printers, they have a large range of printers from SLA to plastic and metal printers.
The ProJet 5000 was created to 3D print plastic but not simple plastic – equipped with high-tech filament it should be able to print very durable objects. Therefore the manufacturer has chosen its VisiJet M5 filament. The VisiJet M5-X features very high tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural strength and heat distortion temp.
To create a material with these high mechanical properties you need a special technique to create the objects. The material is liquid plastic that’s hardened with an UV lamp after each layer of printing. This technique is also called MultiJet Printing (MJP) and it’s even possible to create support structures with wax that can be easily melted.
The possible printing area is quite big with 533.4 x 381 x 299.72 mm and a good grade of detail is possible with a resolution of 750 x 750 x 890 DPI and a minimal layer thickness of 32µ. The printer is pretty heavy with a weight of 538kg and it has a size of 1531 x 908 x 1450 mm (LxWxH). The print head has a 5 year guaranty.
3D Systems has also announced that they work together with the bigger car manufacture in North America, Daimler. Daimler uses the ProJet 5000 to accelerate development and to verify critical designs and parts with a 3D printed model.
