Aheadd CP1 Aluminum Alloy from Constellium qualified for AddUp FormUp 350

Constellium has developed a specialized aluminum alloy called Aheadd CP1 for 3D printing that can now be used on AddUp FormUp 350 machines. This alloy is strikingly different in performance and properties from the commonly used AS7 or AS10 grades.

The current AM market is dominated by AS7 and AS10, which contain mainly aluminum, silicon and magnesium and were originally developed for the foundry industry. Constellium’s Aheadd CP1, an aluminum-iron-zirconium alloy, stands out. With higher solderability, laser power and scanning speed can be increased, boosting productivity. Benefits vary depending on the component being printed.

“To obtain the best mechanical  properties using AS7 and AS10 grades, several long and expensive post-build treatments must be carried  out, such as hot isostatic pressing and, solution and aging Etc,” explains Frédéric Sar, Materials Officer at  AddUp. “With Aheadd CP1, very similar material properties can be achieved with a simple heat  treatment at 400°C.”

Since repressure treatments can account for up to 50% of the cost of L-PBF parts, huge savings could be possible here.

Detailed analysis shows that the mechanical properties of parts made with AddUp from Aheadd CP1 are close to those of AS7 in terms of hardness, at least equivalent in fatigue resistance, and even superior in ductility. In addition, these parts can be anodized to improve corrosion resistance.

Another advantage of Aheadd CP1 is its increased thermal conductivity, making it an ideal choice for heat exchanger applications. Parts made from this material can withstand temperatures of up to 250°C without compromising their microstructure. This opens up new possibilities, especially for lightweight aerospace applications.
