New 3D modeling tool from Bambu Lab creates relief sculptures

With a new 3D modeling tool, Bambu Lab wants to enable users to create unique relief artworks from their favorite models. The “3D to Relief Sculpture” tool is part of the company’s experimental MakerLab series.

The idea behind it: Instead of viewing 3D models head-on as before, they can now be selected from a desired perspective and output as a flat relief with depth information. To do this, one or more models are loaded into the tool, the viewing angle is adjusted and parametric fine-tuning is carried out. The algorithm then calculates the depth values from this perspective and generates a relief model.

Even a combination of different 3D objects in the same relief artwork should look coherent thanks to the process, as Bambu Lab emphasizes. .stl and .obj are supported as import formats.

With “3D to Relief Sculpture”, Bambu Lab takes a contrary approach to the conventional 3D view and opens up creative possibilities for the creation and 3D printing of decorative wall sculptures or other flat relief-like objects.

The tool is part of the MakerLab Experiments, a series of prototypes for collaborative 3D modeling. Here, users can test experimental tools, provide feedback and thus help shape further development. Some prototypes will be published as finished products once development is complete.
