3D printing manufacturer 3D Systems has moved the manufacturing of two strategically important 3D printer platforms in-house. Previously, the systems were produced by two electronics manufacturing service providers, with whom 3D Systems continues to work.
According to 3D Systems, the insourcing move now allows the company to control the entire manufacturing process from design to production. This, it said, allows for higher quality and more innovative products for customers. Production quality could also be improved and delivery times shortened.
3D Systems thus aims to be more flexible in responding to customer needs and offering additive manufacturing with individual printing process adaptations. In-house manufacturing would also allow cost reductions through more efficient processes. Customers could receive greater added value, it says.
Insourcing production of the two 3D printers began in August 2022, and 3D Systems says the first devices produced are ready for customer use. Overall, the company aims to shorten supply chains and reduce inventory by 20 percent by moving manufacturing.
