Dubai introduces world’s first certification for 3D printing in construction

Dubai Municipality has launched a 3D printing certification system for the construction industry. It is said to be the first of its kind in the world. In doing so, Dubai aims to build its position as a global model city for 3D printing in the construction sector.

According to the authority, the system serves as a proactive measure to standardize processes and improve the quality of concrete mixes in licensed factories. Each of these factories must meet certain requirements to receive a mark of conformity.

Municipality Director General Dawoud Al Hajri said the new system was developed in line with international best practices. It is designed to provide exceptional services for residents and businesses and enhance Dubai’s global reputation. At the same time, he said, it supports Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s 3D printing strategy. The goal, he said, is to establish Dubai as the region’s leading hub for 3D printing technologies.

A guide will inform factories of the requirements. The Dubai Central Laboratory will oversee the system with product testing and audits, and issue certificates of compliance. In recent years, various certification systems have already been introduced in Dubai to improve product quality and consumer protection. Now, 3D printing is being added as a forward-looking technology.
