FANTASEA: Ocean depths as a source of inspiration for 3D-printed fashion

The graduation collection of design student Noa Azarzar from the renowned Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, Israel’s top design school, combines fashion with 3D printing technology. After graduating in Fashion & Jewelry, she was inspired by the depths of the sea to create imaginative creations for “FANTASEA”.

Even at a young age, Azarzar felt a mixture of fascination and fear towards the ocean. The unimaginable size, hidden creatures and the sheer power of the forces of nature. These ambivalent emotions formed the starting point for the project.

The unusual outfits are intended to arm the wearer for a stay in the strange and hostile environment of the ocean depths. They are an expression of Azarzar’s ideas of what one would need for such an adventure. Between paralyzing fear and wild imagination, the visionary designs were created.

By using 3D printing, the designer was able to create a physical connection to her ideas and make the imagined shapes, colors and material combinations of fabric and print tangible. The Stratasys J850 TechStyle 3D printer was used for the prints on fabric, without any further post-processing of the prints.

The orange outfit was created as a large single piece in an eleven-day print on the Stratasys FDM F770 3D printer. It was then sanded, polished and painted in a motorcycle workshop.

The results impressively demonstrate how additive manufacturing opens up new possibilities for designers to create innovative fashion. Azarzar was able to realize her “FANTASEA” vision perfectly thanks to 3D printing and prove that this technology can go far beyond mere prototypes or accessories.

The designer is currently completing an internship at D-house Laboritorio Urbano in Milan, Italy. The company offers solutions and designs for the fashion industry using various technologies such as 3D printing.
