Fluent Metal attacks the metal 3D printing market with new technology

Fluent Metal is a new player on the scene in the turbulent market for metal 3D printing. Founded by Peter Schmitt, the former head designer of Desktop Metal, the company promises increased efficiency and greater flexibility with its innovative liquid metal printing technology.

Fluent Metal relies on a so-called “drop-on-demand” process, in which molten metal is applied precisely drop by drop to a substrate. “This elegant approach enables the production of complex metal components,” explains Peter Schmitt, CEO of Fluent Metal. In contrast to Desktop Metal’s laser-based technology, Fluent Metal’s process is said to be more resource-efficient and more versatile in terms of material combinations.

The start-up raised 5.5 million US dollars in a financing round led by venture capitalist E15. The investors see great potential in the new technology. The core of Fluent Metal’s innovation is the drop-on-demand method.

By precisely applying molten metal drop by drop, components can be produced with a high level of detail and structural integrity. The broad material compatibility with various metals opens up potential applications in industries such as aerospace and medical technology. According to the company, it is possible to switch between materials and adjust parameters during the printing process without time-consuming retooling.
