Anyone who operates a 3D printer knows that a suitable environment is needed for optimum printing results. Temperature-sensitive materials in particular require a constant temperature without drafts. One solution here can be a special printer housing.
As Maker wavlew demonstrates, the Billy shelf from Ikea is ideal for this purpose. The Maker has summarized his modifications in a tutorial at Instructables. With its drawer, the printer can be conveniently moved in and out, for example, for maintenance work or to remove printed parts. Thanks to the large shelves, the rack also offers plenty of space for filament, tools and accessories.
Once the printer is in use, it is simply pushed into the shelf and the door is closed. In this way, it is optimally shielded from external influences. The insulation can be further improved with an additional seal.
A nice side effect is that all the 3D printer equipment disappears neatly into the cabinet instead of lying around on the desk. According to wavlew, the Ikea Billy is therefore ideally suited as a 3D printing station for the home.
