Rivelin Robotics leads pioneering project for automation in additive manufacturing

Rivelin Robotics, a pioneer in the field of robotics, is leading a UK Research and Innovation-funded project that aims to revolutionize the automated post-processing of metal parts produced by additive manufacturing processes.

The CAMPFIRE project aims to significantly improve efficiency, sustainability and resilience in manufacturing environments and is supported by Innovate UK and other research councils. With a total funding of £3.7 million for various projects, Rivelin Robotics is setting new standards in industrial manufacturing with its Netshape robots based on 3D vision and force control algorithms.

The partners in the project, including GKN Aerospace, Materials Solutions, Attenborough Medical, Yaskawa EU and Saint-Gobain, are contributing their specific expertise to jointly develop innovative solutions for the post-processing of metal parts from additive manufacturing. This collaboration addresses a well-known problem in the production of end-use parts: the bottleneck in post-processing, especially on a large scale. The CAMPFIRE project promises to take Rivelin Robotics’ Netshape robots to the next level of automation and could revolutionize entire industries such as aerospace, medical technology and energy.

Commenting on the project and where it can lead, Robert Bush, CEO of Rivelin Robotics said: “The support from Innovate UK has been pivotal in accelerating Rivelin Robotics’ journey. The funding not only catalyses the development of our innovative platform, but also empowers us to tackle complex challenges in additive manufacturing. This grant is a key enabler in our mission to revolutionise robotic finishing of near-net-shape parts, enhancing the UK’s position in advanced manufacturing.”

The successful implementation of this project could represent a significant step forward for additive manufacturing, not only making the production of components more efficient and cost-effective, but also enabling compliance with optimized specifications and regulatory standards. Rivelin Robotics and its partners are thus on the cusp of a new era in additive manufacturing that has the potential to unlock growth and investment in automation and AM technologies.
