Shapeways announces affordable Precious Plated Metal finishes in 18k and 14k gold, 14k rose gold and rhodium.
The base of the plated objects are made the same ways as their Polished Brass objects are produced. Shapeways 3D prints wax casts of the model and creates plaster moulds based on them. The mould is then filled with brass and once the metal is hardened, will be carefully removed. Following this process, a layer of palladium is added to increase strength and durability. The object is then finished by adding a 0.5 micron layer of precious alloy on top.
Compared to solid objects made out of precious metals, Shapeways wants to offer a more affordable version, starting at $ 22,00 per cm3 plus an additional $ 30 handling fee.
