3D printer causes apartment fire in Austria

A 3D printer has caused a serious fire in an apartment in St. Johann (Tyrol, Austria). According to the police, the device had been in operation for hours when, on Friday evening, sounds of an explosion and then smoke came from the apartment.

According to the authorities, a cat could only be rescued dead. No people were injured. Neighbors of the apartment building had raised the alarm shortly after 8:30 p.m., whereupon the entire apartment complex was evacuated.

The arriving emergency services from the St. Johann volunteer fire department found pockets of embers and heavy smoke in the study of the affected apartment. Apparently, the 3D printer had already been destroyed.

According to initial findings, everything points to a technical defect in the printer as the cause. It had apparently been in operation unattended all day. Investigations are now underway into how the defect could have occurred.
