Bloodhound LSR is a supersonic car from Grafton LSR Limited which aims for breaking the land speed record of 1000 mph in late 2020. To achieve this ambitious goal, the vehicle needs very lightweight but high strength parts.
For these reasons, UK based Graphite AM has signed a new sponsorship agreement as an official 3D printing partner of the project. The engineering service bureau uses its carbon fibre reinforced powder in an SLS machine to provide an array of small and large parts. The resulting tough components, such as complex air duct fittings are high-temperature-resistant and have a high-quality, smooth finish.
The car is powered by a Rolls-Royce jet engine and a hybrid rocket thruster and has recently been cleared for a 500 mph run on the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa. If everything works as planned, the team tackles the 1000 mph next year.
