SiC Y-TIP Nozzle: Innovative nozzle geometry promises to improve FDM printing

After carefully analyzing the thermo-fluid dynamic processes in FDM nozzles, Francesco Cozzo from Fly-Ass Nozzle has designed a new type of “Y-shaped” nozzle tip. This is said to offer outstanding advantages over conventional designs.

In contrast to the mostly conical standard nozzles, the Sic “Y-Tip” Nozzle has a fork-shaped tip. The developer is convinced that this geometry minimizes the risk of blockages caused by hotspots. In addition, the bifurcation acts like a “melting pot”, which should promote a more continuous flow of the printing material.

Silicon carbide (SiC) was selected as the material. This choice is due to its characteristics, which include extreme hardness, good thermal conductivity, and resistance to thermal shock. These qualities fulfill the crucial requirements for the highly stressed nozzle area. The prototype validated the theoretical assumptions and underwent testing for 8000 hours of printing, showing no signs of wear.
