upnano: Austrian 2PP 3D printing pioneer celebrates fifth anniversary

Vienna-based Austrian company UpNano is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Since its founding in 2018, the developer of high-performance 3D printers in the field of “two-photon polymerization” (2PP) has established itself as a key player in the global market.

UpNano has consistently surprised the industry in recent years with a series of innovations that have significantly expanded the performance and application capabilities of the company’s NanoOne printer series. According to CEO Bernhard Küenburg, UpNano recognized early on the potential of combining powerful laser technology with patented “adaptive resolution.”

This resulted in the compact NanoOne series, which enables a previously unattainable print resolution over twelve orders of magnitude. UpNano was able to ship its first printer as early as 2019. Since 2020, sales have doubled annually. The key factor is versatility for science and industry.

In 2022, MIT.nano partnered with UpNano and secured a NanoOne printer. This allows interested parties in the U.S. to experience the capabilities live. Constant innovation is driven by the R&D department in Vienna. In 2021, their expansion enabled new materials such as UpBlack or UpThermo for optical and electronic applications.

Also in 2021, UpNano launched NanoOne Bio, a system for 3D bioprinting. Tilt compensation from 2022 can compensate for tilting of the print bed. The latest breakthrough is a software upgrade called Smart Stitching, which further improves print speed and quality.

According to CEO Küenburg, the numerous awards are proof of the technology’s great importance. Despite its success, UpNano remains privately owned by its founders, he said. Growth is due to equity and cash flow.
