iOS 17: New app enables 3D scanning with iPhone and iPad

Cephalopod Studio has released a free iOS app called “3D Scanner: Sapling” that can be used to scan objects in 3D. According to the developer, the app was created using the new photogrammetry features of iOS 17.

The app allows users to capture objects and convert them into 3D models using the LiDAR scanners on newer iPhones and iPads. Alternatively, on devices without LiDAR, images can be captured and sent to the free Mac version of the app for processing.

The 3D models created can be processed directly on compatible iOS devices, according to the developer. An export function also enables the creation of files for 3D printing (STL and OBJ) or augmented reality (USDZ).

The developer highlights the ease of use thanks to the program libraries provided by Apple for the LiDAR scans. This would allow users to easily digitize their own objects. The basic version of the scanning app is free, while a Pro version is available for $0.99.
