JourneyMaker Kit: Compact and mobile 3D printer you can build yourself

The Positron project presented by Kralyn3D in 2020 attracted attention with a unique printing principle: instead of printing from above, the FDM 3D printer prints upside down. The advantages: The printed part adheres very well due to the heated printing plate, the center of gravity is low and so the design can be folded to save space. However, the Positron project has so far been difficult to replicate yourself.

The JourneyMaker Kit should now provide a remedy. The kit is backed by members of the Positron community, who have revised the 3D printer and made it more accessible. According to the developers, the CNC parts of the original can be replaced by an inexpensive kit that prefabricates important components.

Another point of criticism of the original design was the cumbersome assembly. A new edge connector has therefore been implemented, which eliminates the need for tedious wiring and soldering. The JourneyMaker version should be easier to assemble overall.

Instead of the previously used solder connection for the heated pressure plate, a plug-in connection is now used, similar to a RAM latch. The developers demonstrate the assembly in a video.

Other new features include preparations for custom modifications. This should make it easy to integrate alternative print heads and extruders in the future. Users are already working on corresponding extensions in a Discord community.

The JourneyMaker kit with components and assembly instructions is available from Voxolite. The store also offers a matching transport case. The complete documentation with CAD files can be found on GitHub.
