Prusa discontinues production of Original Prusa i3 MK3 and offers upgrade kits

After more than six years, Josef Prusa, founder of Czech 3D printer manufacturer Original Prusa, has announced the end of production of the successful Original Prusa i3 MK3 model. According to the company, production of the kit was already discontinued on February 29, 2024. Fully assembled printers from remaining stocks will still be available until around the end of April.

Prusa set new standards in the consumer 3D printing market with the MK3 in 2017. At the time, the model introduced innovations such as removable printing plates, a filament sensor and more. The MK3 also impressed with its high print quality and robustness. According to Prusa, the MK3 became the best-selling 3D printer ever for private users.

Over the years, Prusa’s development team continuously improved the hardware and software. In turn, the community contributed its own modifications, some of which found their way into official updates. Thanks to this maintenance, the MK3 is still one of the most popular desktop 3D printers today.

According to Josef Prusa, however, Prusa would like to focus on newer models such as the successor MK4 in the future. However, owners of older MK3s can bring their printers up to a technically comparable level with upgrade kits. This means that the Original Prusa i3 MK3 is far from over.
