Maker R. Koolstar has published the data for the 3D printing of a self-made knitting machine on the Thingiverse platform. According to Koolstar, it is his own design, but is based on existing designs.
The aim was to create a low-cost, low-friction knitting machine that can be replicated with little effort. To achieve this, as few moving parts and ball bearings as possible are used at wear-prone points. The needles are available as standard.
According to Koolstar, the printed parts can be assembled without a great deal of reworking. The contact surfaces for the needles are lined with soft wire to reduce friction and wear. Overall, Koolstar estimates the construction costs at less than 50 euros.
The 3D print files are available free of charge on Thingiverse. Detailed information on the construction of the knitting machine can also be found there. Koolstar wants to make it easier for other makers to enter the world of self-built textile machines.
