3D Printing Helps Bringing The MOON Down To Earth

For more than four years the artist Oscar Lhermitte worked on building the perfect model of the moon – now its reality.

During more than four years of development Oscar used high resolution pictures taken by NASA and designed a 3D model of the moon. From this model a 3D printed moon was created. This very detailed 1/20 million replica of the moon was used to build a mould. All moulded moons are handmade by the team of Oscar.

To present craters and surface of the moon in the right light the team developed an electronically controlled sun. This LED light ring is controlled by a specific designed computer which has the same memory capacity as the original computer on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969. The sun can mimic the exact position of the real sun to simulate the shadow on the moon.

The MOON can be preordered on Kickstarter for £300 without the sun. With the controlled sun you have to pay £500.
