3D Printing Startup Desktop Metal Raises $ 33.8 M in Series B Funding

Massachusetts-based 3D printing startup Desktop Metal has just closed a Series B equity funding round with an investment of $ 33.76 million, adding up to a total of $ 47.76 Million including the first funding round in October 2015.

Investors include Stratasys, Bolt, Data Collective, Founder Collective, Lux Capital, KPCB and NEA. Among the team of experts in the fields of material science and metallurgy, mechanical engineering, robotics, industrial design, software, 3D printer and CAD, are a number of MIT professors. Their collective aim is to develop a desktop 3D printer capable of printing with metals.

“Desktop Metal is the effortless way to go from 3D CAD to robust metal parts. Our family of 3D printers will build complex parts beautifully and at a price that makes it attainable by every design and manufacturing team”, they explain on their website. CEO Ric Fulop explained after their first funding round in October last year, that metal 3D printing has been out of the reach of most companies because it’s very expensive and slow. This is why they decided to develop a system that is both fast and accessible.
