Gravity Sketch: Intuitive 3D Modelling App for the iPad

The London-based tech startup Gravity Sketch has just released a 3D modelling app for the Apple iPad. It allows users to intuitively sketch simple 3D designs, that can be sent off to Shapeways for 3D printing or shared on Sketchfab.

Gravity Sketch provides a variety of simple and easy-to-use tools for users to draw 3D images on their iPad with their fingers. It is specially aimed at students and teachers to illustrate their projects, as well as kids and crafters to 3D print their own designs.

The app has been developed by Royal College of Art graduates Guillaume Couche, Daniela Paredes Fuentes, Pierre Paslier and Oluwaseyi Sosanya, who wanted to create a 3D modelling application that can be used by anyone and with no prior experience with CAD software.

“As a team of designers working at the Royal College of Art, we used to get so frustrated with the existing software packages when it comes to 3D printing anything at all,” said Gravity Sketch cofounder Oluwaseyi Sosanya.

Gravity Sketch has also teamed up with 3D printing service provider Shapeways so users can order 3D prints directly from the app. Additionally, 3D designs can be shared through Sketchfab.

“Gravity Sketch is on a mission to lower the barriers to 3D literacy, the ability to create and manipulate 3D content,” said Pierre Paslier. “With the lowering price of 3D printing, and the rise of virtual reality, our team really believes that 3D literacy is the key to the future for science, creativity and entertainment.”

Gravity Sketch is available for free download in the Apple App Store.
