During the International Conference for Cyber-Physical Systems in Vienna, a US-American researcher shows a way to reconstruct the gcode of an object just by listening.
The team of researchers around Mohammad Al Faruque developed an algorithm that can reconstruct the code which defines the shape of a 3D printed object. In order to do that, the software only needs an audio recording of the noises the 3D printer produces during the printing process. The software replicates the gcode with a 90% accuracy.
According to the researchers from the Advanced Integrated Cyber-Physical Systems (AICPS) Lab at the University of California this can be used for espionage purposes. So they recommend to insert a withe noise into the gcode.
As this technology is still in development, we at 3Printr.com recommend to turn on the radio while 3D printing important stuff!
