Shap-E: ChatGPT makers present AI tool for 3D models

OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI tool ChatGPT, has presented a scientific paper on Shap-E. This is a text-to-3D model tool that aims to enable text-based creation of 3D models.

Heewoo Jun and Alex Nichol presented a paper on this on May 3, 2023, describing their approach to the Shap-E model. Already in December 2022, AI presented the Point-E model. This is a system for generating 3D point clouds from complex input prompts. Shap-E is faster and provides better results. On GitHub, the researchers have also published examples.

Shap-E has the potential to have a profound impact on the 3D printing industry. By simplifying and accelerating the 3D modeling process, the AI tool enables wider use of the technology by both experts and novices, which can lead to faster prototypes, more efficient production, and an overall more creative application of 3D printing. The continued development and proliferation of tools like Shap-E will undoubtedly contribute to this.
