Smart Layer – Xact Metal introduces software for automated visual monitoring

To expand access to affordable metal 3D printing for small and medium businesses and decentralize additive manufacturing, Xact Metal is introducing Smart Layer, a software solution for automated visual monitoring and real-time analysis of its laser metal powder bed printers.

Smart Layer is an intelligent monitoring solution designed for metal additive manufacturing. Using computer vision algorithms and convolutional neural networks, Smart Layer performs layer-by-layer analysis and detects anomalies in real time. When problems are detected, Smart Layer immediately notifies operators to prevent print failures.

Xact Metal has partnered with Addiguru to provide the foundation for Smart Layer. Addiguru provides in-situ monitoring technology for additive manufacturing processes. During the printing process, part anomalies can occur that are difficult for operators to detect manually and, if not detected, require costly post-production inspections and repairs. Addiguru has recognized and committed to meeting the need for a robust, real-time defect detection tool for the rapidly growing 3D printing market.
