Spare Parts 3D uses AI to make 2D data accessible for 3D printing

French software start-up Spare Parts 3D has launched Theia, an AI-based tool for automatically converting 2D design data into 3D printable models. The solution aims to make it easier for companies to enter the additive manufacturing of spare parts.

Many companies have extensive inventories of technical drawings and plans as their only product documentation. However, manually reconstructing the 3D geometries is very time-consuming. Theia digitizes this legacy data in seconds using deep learning and computer vision.

The system automatically recognizes geometric shapes, dimensions and other metadata in 2D drawings and generates printable 3D models from them. “The big challenge is understanding and interpreting the content from the 2D representation,” explains project supervisor Professor Nabil Anwer.

Theia is integrated into Spare Parts 3D’s DigiPart platform, which uses AI to identify 3D printable parts and make production recommendations. This enables users to digitize spare parts warehouses and have them manufactured locally on site. Target groups include the energy, defense and shipping industries with high spare parts requirements.
