The RepRapMicron project: Aiming for micron accuracy in 3D printing

A new project within the RepRap community is pushing the boundaries of manufacturing accuracy even further: The μRepRap project (also RepRapMicron) has set itself the goal of developing a 3D printer for micron manufacturing that enables sub-micron (1⁄1000 millimeter) precision.

In the early days of 3D printing, the focus was initially on a coarser resolution in the millimeter range. However, as it became more widespread, the need for finer manufacturing accuracy also grew, for example for the production of microelectronics, microsystems and components for biological applications.

This is precisely where the μRepRap project comes in: Inspired by the microscopy platforms of the OpenFlexure project, existing RepRap components as well as 3D-printed parts with affordable standard materials are intended to open up new possibilities for microfabrication.

Expectations for the first prototype are high. A repeatable positioning accuracy of less than 3 micrometers over a 10 mm working area and the ability to produce probes on a micrometer scale. Simple ink pens or photosensitive resins will initially be used as the deposition system.

The project founder plans to set up an OpenFlexure Delta stage with three axes and microscope connection as an experimental platform. Initial tests include the production of controlled ink deposits and polymer microdroplets.

While the goal is ambitious, the RepRap movement has shown since its inception that collaborative development of open source hardware and a distributed spirit of innovation can lead to remarkable results. The μRepRap project once again demonstrates the unwavering spirit of invention and the pursuit of new dimensions of decentralized manufacturing within the RepRap community.
