Disney Research is very ambitious in the field of 3D printing and 3D technologies in general. Now, they have been granted a patent for a process for Object Recognition For 3D Printing.
The patent describes a process and system that scans an object, generates a first 3D model and communicates this model to a server which compares the file with others to avoid plurality. During that process, the 3D scanner makes a more detailed 3D model with a higher resolution. If the model of the object already is in the database, the object can be 3D printed by a printer connected to the system right away, or it uses the second more detailed scan to generate a 3D printable file.
If Disney plans to use this system in the near future is unclear.
